Pipe flange specifications establish the dimensional, material, testing, and marking requirements that ensure flanges from different manufacturers are interchangeable and suitable for their intended service. The primary dimensional standards are ASME B16.5 (sizes 1/2" through 24"), ASME B16.47 (sizes 26" through 60"), and AWWA C207 (waterworks flanges up to 144").
Material specifications define the chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, and testing requirements for the flange forging. ASTM A105 covers carbon steel forgings, A182 covers stainless and alloy steel forgings, A350 covers low-temperature carbon and alloy steel forgings, and B381 covers titanium forgings. Each material specification has multiple grades with different property requirements.
