API 6A Flange Slide Rule

The API 6A standard governs flanges and connectors used in wellhead and christmas tree equipment. Unlike ASME B16.5 flanges that use class designations (150, 300, 600, etc.), API 6A flanges are rated by working pressure in pounds per square inch (psi). The standard pressure ratings are 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000 psi. Each rating defines the maximum allowable working pressure at ambient temperature (100 F), with de-rating required at elevated temperatures depending on the material class selected.

API 6A defines material classes designated AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF, and HH. Each material class specifies a group of acceptable materials with defined mechanical properties and temperature limits. Class AA covers basic carbon steel suitable for non-sour service at moderate temperatures. Class BB and CC are low-alloy steels with improved toughness for lower temperature service. Class DD applies to stainless and corrosion-resistant alloys. Classes EE and FF are designated for sour service (H2S environments) and require compliance with NACE MR0175. Class HH covers special materials for extreme temperature or corrosion conditions. The slide rule concept refers to the practice of cross-referencing pressure rating, material class, and operating temperature to determine whether a given flange is suitable for a specific service condition.

When selecting an API 6A flange, engineers must verify that the rated working pressure at the maximum expected operating temperature meets or exceeds the design pressure of the system. Temperature de-rating curves published in API 6A Table 4 provide the allowable pressure at temperatures above ambient. For example, a 10,000 psi rated flange in Class AA material may only be suitable for 8,000 psi at 250 F. It is critical to consult the current edition of API 6A and perform a proper pressure-temperature cross-check before specifying flanges for wellhead service.
