Flange Types
Socket Weld Flanges
Flanges with a recessed bore for small-diameter, high-pressure piping.
Socket weld flanges feature a counterbored (recessed) bore that receives the pipe end, similar to a socket weld fitting. The pipe is inserted into the socket until it contacts the shoulder, then backed off approximately 1/16" to allow for weld shrinkage before a fillet weld is applied around the outside of the hub. This produces a smooth internal bore with good flow characteristics.
These flanges are used primarily in small-bore piping systems (1/2" through 4") where the operating pressure is high enough to warrant a stronger connection than a threaded joint but where full-penetration butt welds and radiographic examination are not required. Socket weld flanges are common in chemical process piping, hydraulic systems, steam lines, and instrument piping.
Flanges.IO supplies socket weld flanges in all standard sizes (1/2" through 4"), pressure classes (150 through 2500), and materials including carbon steel (A105), stainless steel (A182 F304/F316), and alloy grades. All flanges conform to ASME B16.5 dimensional requirements. Contact us for stock availability and pricing.
